Every air conditioner produces condensate — water pulled out of the air as it cools — and that water is supposed to drain harmlessly outside through a small PVC line. Algae, dust, and debris build up inside the condensate line over months of heavy use until it clogs completely. With nowhere to drain, the water backs up into the drain pan, and once that pan overflows, it goes wherever gravity takes it.

In most Lake Forest homes, that means an attic air handler overflowing straight through the ceiling below, or a closet-mounted unit soaking the closet floor and the wall it backs up against. Either way, by the time you see a stain spreading across a ceiling or a wet closet floor, the pan has usually been overflowing for a while.
